On the evening of September 22, at Erato School of Music and Performing Arts, 30 Doan Thi Diem, Hanoi, Vietnam’s first community choir – Green Wind Choir, was officially launched.
Gathering nearly 100 members, ranging from 5 to 81 years old, regardless of profession, gender, musical level, etc. Green Wind Choir was born from the dream of the female choir conductor Nguyen Hai Yen: to bring choral art to everyone, in an exciting and “organic” way.
Before her contribution at Green Wind , Nguyen Hai Yen had conducted many children’s and adult choirs, participated in international choir festivals and most recently, she was very successful as the conductor of the Diversity Choir, within the framework of a project of the Institute for Social, Economic and Environmental Studies (iSEE).

She shared: “My vision for Green Wind is to bring joy and freshness to everyone, including a healthier environment. We plan to gather every week, singing together as a way of enriching our lives. In the future, we aim to organize performances to raise funds for Green Wind, supporting individuals who are passionate about music but face challenges in pursuing their dreams. I hope that Green Wind’s influence will not only resonate in Hanoi but also spread to many other places across the country.”
In Vietnam, choral art is typically seen as “professional,” involving stages, artists, and established bands. There are very few amateur choirs, and most of them are sponsored by organizations or businesses, often coming together only temporarily to perform at specific events. Green Wind is pioneering as the first choir to operate under the community choir model, serving the community and being self-managed by its members, with a strong foundation of mutual respect and a commitment to environmental consciousness.
